Causes and Consequences of “Absence of Racial Harmony in Singapore” @ 1:59 AM |
|
To totally eradicate racialism is totally is difficult if not impossible because you are dealing with people’s emotions and mindsets, which have been mounded through years of misconceptions. However, we must try to lessen racist attitudes through education and information. These will help people understand more about other races, religion, cultures and beliefs. In Singapore, the people commemorate Racial Harmony Day on every 21 July. On this day in 1964, Singapore saw racial riots. It was the worst racial riot ever happened in Singapore. The incident taught us a very valuable lesson, i.e. to tolerate each other. This can only be achieved only by having better understanding among the people in Singapore. Now, even though there are different types of races living here, they manage to live in peace and harmony. These will ensure the continued peace and prosperity that we have enjoyed for many years.
In fact, the constant compartmentalization of Singaporeans into their CMIO (Chinese, Malay, Indian and Others) moulds may accentuate stereotypes of each race and discipline individuals into focusing on each other’s skin color. By placing these contextually different historical events (such as the Maria Hertogh riots) together, one is more likely to regard fellow Singaporeans through racial lenses while also perpetuating a sense of insecurity. Nevertheless, taking into consideration the current global climate, to promote inter-racial cohesion by giving examples of stereotypes of the different racial groups serve more harm than good. This is because in order to bring to attention the differences between races that have to be bridged, there is a tendency to resort to stereotypes to illustrate its existence before work can be done to eradicate it. Racial Harmony Month could also be replaced with a month that commemorates another aspect of NE – community involvement projects. This aspect of NE nurtures active citizenship, social responsibility, compassion and leadership skills through voluntarism in all areas of Singapore life, ranging from community service to the less privileged, responsibility for the environment, and an awareness of shared democratic civic duties. Such a focus would serve as a better vehicle to strengthen trust between Singaporeans in their capacity as Singaporeans rather than their hyphenated identity.

Building Community @ 12:31 AM |
|
Look around and you will see that our society is very diverse. Diversity enriches our lives. Much as the biological diversity of an ecosystem increases its stability and productivity, cultural diversity brings together the resources and talents of many people for the shared benefit of all.
One may asks: What is building community?
Well, It is field of practices directed toward the creation of community where everyone lives together harmoniously, having common interests.
Then how do we build our community, making it a greater place for all of us to live in?
Simple practices like having book clubs or large-scale efforts such as mass festivals helps to bring people of all races together.
We can all play our part to build a community where everyone respects one another regardless of race, religion and socio-economic background, a tolerant society.
From young, children need to respect others and noot to pre-judge them. Parents to discipline them to behave respectfully towards others and make it clear that it is wrong to tease or criticise a person because of his or her apperance or religion. Some people behave in harmful ways towards other people and their behaviour is not tolerated.
From schools, teachers could play a part to educate students to respct others and teach students to put themselves in other people's shoes, that is, to care other people's feelings and not to hurt or anger them unnecessarily.
What could be the consequences of not playing a part in building a community?
There would be an increasing trend in violence happening due to differences among people. It would be hard to make people to see themselves as one and work towards a common goal, which affects a country's economy and progress. If everyone does not make an effort to prevent or stop it, it would affect our next generation. Can you imagine? A world filled with chaos, unhappiness, anger and violence. It would be quite disastrous. Therefore, i think that everyone should contribute to the society by making an environment that is conducive for us to live in.

Embracing Diversity @ 9:45 AM |

What is embracing diversity? When one embraces diversity, he accepts other people who are different from him in terms of looks, races, religions and even gender. Everyone is different and everyone must understand that. When one knows how to acknowledge the differences of each and everyone of us out there, they would then learn how to respect them. Knowing how to respect these differences is another different story. It is one more step to peace and harmony. For example, a chinese man would be able to understand that his friend, a malay, practices a different religion as he himself. However, he might not be able to respect what his friend does and may have said or done something to hurt his friend's feelings. Being respectful is thus very important and just understanding alone is not enough to embrace diversity.Understanding that the world consists of many more other types of human beings except your kind is a very first step to take. How to be respectful towards the difference then? Firstly, we must not be biased. We must not hate a person because of his race. We must not make rude remarks on another religion and we must never discriminate the other gender. We must learn to love and care for one another so that we would stay united and work well together to make the world a better place to live in. With happiness and peace around the world, we would have then build a nation and also embraced diversity.
With that, riots and wars would be prevented. There would be no discriminations and fights going on when people understands and accept one another. The importance of embracing diversity thus is important in maintaining peace and harmony around the world and making it a safe and peaceful place to live in with people bonded and united together.

What is embracing diversity and building community? As the topic for this project, we would be introducing its meaning , significance and importance. We believe many of you out there would love to live in a peaceful and bonded world. Who would like a dangerous and life-threatening environment to live in? Therefore, maintaining a united nation is extremely important. Without riots, killings and war, we are sure to become a wonderful nation. How can we do that? Read on to find out.:D
